Woohoo, I’m famous. I submitted my top 5 albums of 2005 for Emusic‘s poll last December, and lo and behold, they quoted one of my comments.
Most of these will look familiar, but for the record, my top five on emusic last year were:
Of Montreal / The Sunlandic Twins
Far and away my favorite album of the year. I had tried Of Montreal a few times before this album and had never been able to get into them, but this album is the perfect blend of pop perfection and lyrical weirdness. This album is so much fun.
Aimee Mann / The Forgotten Arm
I really don’t know what possessed Aimee Mann to think a concept album about a boxer and his girlfriend in the 1970’s would be a good idea for an album, but it turns out that it was. There wasn’t much chance that I would dislike an Aimee Mann disc, but it took me a while to warm up to this one. Now that I have, I’m hooked.
The Decemberists / Picaresque
This third full length from the Decemberists is a little bit predictable, the upside of which is that it’s predictably good… and there’s no one else around spinning twee little wonders quite like Colin Meloy.
Brendan Benson / Alternative to Love
I’ve really been eagerly awaiting the follow-up to Lapalco, and this disc is a great payoff. It’s still great power-pop, but seems a little bit more adult, somehow, perhaps a little bit more serious.
Sufjan Stevens / Illinoise
Hooray for Sufjan Stevens, and his funny titles and brilliant songs. I can’t wait until he gets to my home state.
